Hyomandibular Suspension to address hypopharygneal airway collapse in OSAPerformed by Otolaryngologists (ENT) and select Oral/Maxillofacial Surgeons nationwide, the Airlift Hyoid Suspension is a general anesthesia surgical procedure, performed in an Operating Room or Ambulatory Surgery Center based upon individual patient needs. The roughly 45 minute procedure places two small titanium bone screws on the lingual surface of the mandible and a series of sutures are placed around the Hyoid bone with one or two, small incisions under the chin and in the neck. The sutures are then secured to the bone screws and the Hyoid bone and associated musculature are moved forward slightly, improving the volume of the airway, but most importantly, preventing it from collapsing back during sleep. It can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with other procedures to address other contributing points of obstruction as found to be impacting each individual patient during airway examination by the physician.
The Hyoid Suspension is covered by virtually all insurers when patients have participated in a Sleep Study and are found to suffer with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (as opposed to Central Sleep Apnea or many other sleep disorders) and have exhausted the medical therapy options available for addressing OSA, including CPAP and Oral Appliance Therapy solutions like our SomnoGuard. The procedure is performed with two, single patient use, sterile items that are arranged by the facility performing the procedure.
